Reconciliation Cross from Mt. Baekdu and Mt. Halla

Sunghwan Kim is a woodworker and the founder of Cana Creation (www.canacreation.com). He is also an ordained pastor and popular speaker who enjoys skin diving, biking, and exploring ways to see God in extraordinary everyday life. He was part of the ReconciliAsian team that went to China in November.

Last November, I went up to Mt. Baekdu, the tallest mountain in the Korean Peninsula which borders China and North Korea. There were many reasons to visit Mt. Baekdu, but one of my primary goals was to find pieces of wood from this famous mountain. It was cold (-7°C/18°F), but I was able to pick up a few pieces of a fallen branch.

A few days later, I flew from China to Jeju Island in South Korea. Jeju Island is the most famous island in South Korea and was formed from a volcanic mountain, Mt. Halla. I went to the mountain behind the 4.3 Peace Museum and there found some pieces of fallen branches.

When I returned to Los Angeles from Asia, I worked with two pieces of wood—one from Mt. Baekdu and one from Mt. Halla—to create the Reconciliation Cross.

In the future, when North and South Korea are reunified, I would like the Panmunjeom or Joint Security Area that borders North and South Korea to be used as a church instead of a military security area.

I would like that church in Panmunjeon to be called “Peace Church” and hang the Reconciliation Cross that was created by inter-connecting wood pieces from Mt. Baekdu and Mt. Halla.

While working on this cross, my tears flowed uncontrollably.

In Ezekiel 37, there is a scene where Ezekiel prophesies about the two nations of Judah and Israel reuniting. He uses two sticks to illustrate this. I pray that this will also be true for the Korean Peninsula.

Ezekiel 37:15-23

15 The word of the Lord came to me: 16 “Son of man, take a single stick and write on it: Belonging to Judah and the Israelites associated with him. Then take another stick and write on it: Belonging to Joseph—the stick of Ephraim—and all the house of Israel associated with him. 17 Then join them together into a single stick so that they become one in your hand. 18 When your people ask you, ‘Won’t you explain to us what you mean by these things?’— 19 tell them: This is what the Lord God says: I am going to take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel associated with him, and put them together with the stick of Judah. I will make them into a single stick so that they become one in My hand. 20 “When the sticks you have written on are in your hand and in full view of the people, 21 tell them: This is what the Lord God says: I am going to take the Israelites out of the nations where they have gone. I will gather them from all around and bring them into their own land. 22 I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel, and one king will rule over all of them. They will no longer be two nations and will no longer be divided into two kingdoms. 23 They will not defile themselves anymore with their idols, their detestable things, and all their transgressions. I will save them from all their apostasies by which they sinned, and I will cleanse them. Then they will be My people, and I will be their God.

백두산의 나무와 한라산의 나무로 만든 <화목의 십자가 (Reconciliation Cross)>

지난 11월, 저는 백두산에 다녀왔습니다. 다녀온 여러 이유가 있지만 그 중 하나, 백두산에서 나무를 주워오기 위함이었습니다. 영하 18도의 추운 백두산 숲 속에서 땅에 떨어진 자작나무 몇 토막을 주웠습니다.

그로부터 며칠 후, 북경과 인천공항을 경유해서 제주도 한라산에 갔습니다. 4.3 평화 박물관 뒤, 한라산 기슭에서 나무 몇 토막을 주웠습니다.

미국 L.A 에 돌아와서 두 나무를 다듬어 <화목의 십자가>를 만들었습니다.

훗날, 통일된 한반도에서는 판문점이 교회 건물이 되면 좋겠습니다.

판문점 교회를 <평화 교회>라 명명하고 한때 분열의 상징이었던 벽 한가운데 백두산과 한라산의 두 나무 막대기를 연결하여 만든 저 <화목의 십자가>를 걸 수 있으면 좋겠습니다.

십자가를 만들다가 울컥하여 작동하던 톱을 멈추고 용암같은 눈물 쏟았습니다.

훗날, 통일된 한반도에서는 판문점이 교회 건물이 되면 좋겠습니다.

에스겔서 37장에 보면 선지자가 두 나무조각을 합하며 두 나라가 하나가 될 것을 예언하는 장면이 나옵니다. 이 말씀이 한반도에 이루어지길 바랍니다.

37:15 주께서 내게 말씀하셨다.

37:16 "너 사람아, 너는 막대기 하나를 가져다가, 그 위에 유다 및 그와 연합한 이스라엘 자손이라고 써라. 막대기를 또 하나 가져다가 그 위에 이브라임의 막대기 곧 요셉 및 그와 연합한 이스라엘 온 족속이라고 써라.

37:17 그리고 두 막대기가 하나가 되게, 그 막대기를 서로 연결시켜라. 그것들이 네 손에서 하나가 될 것이다.

37:18 네 민족이 네게 묻기를 이것이 무슨 뜻인지 우리에게 일러주지 않겠느냐 ? 하면,

37:19 너는 그들에게 말해 주어라. 나 주 하나님이 말한다. 내가 에브라임의 손 안에 있는 요셉과 그와 연합한 이스라엘 지파의 막대기를 가져다 놓고, 그 위에 유다의 막대기를 연결시켜서, 그 둘을 한 막대기로 만들겠다. 그들이 내 손에서 하나가 될 것이다 하셨다고 하여라.

37:20 또 너는, 글 쓴 두 막대기를 그들이 보는 앞에서 네 손을 들고,

37:21 그들에게 말해 주어라. 나 주 하나님이 말한다. 이스라엘 백성이 들어가 살고 있는 그 여러 민족 속에서 내가 그들을 데리고 나오며, 사방에서 그들을 모아다가, 그들의 땅으로 데리고 들어가겠다.

37:22 그들의 땅 이스라엘의 산 위에서 내가 그들을 한 백성으로 만들고, 한 임금이 그들을 다스리게 하며 그들이 다시는 두 민족이 되지 않고, 두 나라로 갈라지지 않을 것이다.

37:23 그들이 다시는 우상과 역겨운 것과 온갖 범죄로 자기들을 더럽히지 않을 것이다. 그들이 범죄한 그 모든 곳에서, 내가 그들을 구해 내어 깨끗이 씻어 주면, 그들은 내 백성이 되고 나는 그들의 하나님이 될 것이다.
